At school you learned to read English. However, you did so very slowly. You didn’t learn how to read quickly by ignoring unknown words or by guessing. And so reading is probably painful for you.

This activity is designed to break those bad habits.

You won’t need to read for comprehension. All that you need do is to scan. And scanning is a very important skill.

Here’s what to do: Get out the phrases and the half sentences from the previous two activities. And then, during the 10-minute period, look over the text of the corresponding chapter and look for those 10 + 10 phrases. When you find them, underline them.

That’s all!

Unless, of course, you complete this activity in less than ten minutes, in which case you’ll need to keep yourself occupied until the bell rings. You could see how the pairs matched up and well you managed to guess. And you could see how the phrases fitted in with the text as a whole.

This activity is great training to be able to read groups of words instead of one at a time.
