1: フレーズ遊び

このアクティビティはフレーズと遊ぶことを含む。それが何で、何のために行うのかをこれから説明しよう。

学校では語彙をバラバラの単語として習ってきたはずだ。でも、それらの単語を使うためには、それらを一塊のグループ、つまりフレーズとして扱う練習をする必要がある。そのためのベストな方法が「遊ぶ」ことだ。遊びは重要な教育ツールであるにも関わらず、学校では大方見過ごされている。

遊びはストレスフリーの環境で起こる。単語遊びはあなたの脳をより柔軟で発明的にする。フレーズで遊ぶことは、自然なやりかたで単語を使うことにあなたを慣れさせる。勉強するよりそうして遊ぶことが、単語をよく知り馴染むことにつながる。

フレーズで遊ぶと単語がどのようにつながっているか感覚的に分かるようになる。それはあなたの中に潜んだ語彙を活性化する。イディオムや句動詞も学び、直感的に単語を結びつけられるようになる。

Juppun wa juubunに登場するフレーズはランダムに選ばれているわけではない（通常のフレーズ本とはこことが違う点だ）。１０のフレーズで１セットになったものはHadashi no Tabiの章からの抜粋だ。章はストーリーとしてつながっているため、そこには豊かな語彙の文脈がある。

フレーズには本の中で繰り返し登場するキーワードが含まれている。そうしてキーワードに繰り返し遭遇するため、復習や記憶の必要がない。これが「体内辞書」を育てる方法だ。

 

Example

This activity asks you ‘play’ with phrases. What does this mean, and why should you do that?

Well, at school you learned vocabulary as individual words. But to be able to use that vocabulary you need practice at dealing with groups of words—phrases. And the best practice is play. Although play is a very important educational tool, it is largely overlooked.

Playing with words trains your brain to be inventive in a stress-free environment. So by playing with phrases, you get used to using words. You get to know and make friends with them, the same way that you did with classmates at school.

By playing with phrase you’ll get a sense of how words connect. You’ll activate your vocabulary. You’ll learn idioms and phrasal verbs. You’ll learn which words usually go together.

The phrases here won’t be random (as they usually are in a phrase book). Each set of ten comes from one chapter of a book. And those chapters all connect as a story. In other words, this activity occurs in a rich vocabulary context. 

The words in these phrases repeat throughout the book. You won’t need to revise or memorize them because you’ll encounter them often. This is how to ‘grow’ an internal dictionary.

Continue this activity for ten minutes exactly. Remember, you aren’t doing it to complete it, or to do it quickly, or to get the correct answers. It’s about spending the time.

So set a kitchen timer to 10 minutes. During those ten phrases do all sorts of things. 

Rank the phrases in order of difficulty. Read them aloud. Imagine their order in a story. You could highlight familiar words and underline the ones that are difficult to pronounce.

Just go ahead and let yourself play!
